PostSubject: New crawling spot   Sun 25 Feb 2007, 01:31

Hey guys, had a few minutes before the wife got home, so I grabbed clodstall and mutt and went to a spot I have been seeing ever since I first went to Bullhole. All I am gonna say is.............DAMN! It's huge! Way more places to crawl than could ever be covered by all in the club put together! It's 5 times the size of Bullhole. LARGE natural rock, LOTS of crevasses, easily capable of running 3 or more courses at once. Very short walk, maybe 100 yards from the parking area? We covered 1 area today. Probably 1/32nd of the whole area. It's also very easy to find. It's dead on HWY 64 east, 1 1/2 miles east of Pittsboro N.C. Haw River is where it is. It can easily handle 2.2 and super crawlers. I'm talking at LEAST 3/4's of a mile of rock. Some areas are broken and too far between to crawl, but the majority is easily more than we could ever crawl in one day. Clodstall has some pics and videos, hopefully he can get them up and running.

I'll even go one better and say that if anyone goes there and is disappointed with what is there, I'll pay for your gas to get back home. It's just that nice of a place. I'm not talking of just one place either. I'm talking at least 3/4 mile ++++ of rock. It is well worth any drive to see this place.

Sounds nice Timmy. I can't wait to see some pictures. Is this a public place? In other words would a large group of us be a problem? Parking? You know all my normal questions.

Wow! looks like a very cool place. Looks like it has a few water hazards. But plenty of rocks to crawl on away from the water. Nice find guys.

There was some concerns with a long walk at Raven rock. Would this place be a better choice? I have not been to both. So I am asking people who have been to both. We could switch this place with Raven rock on the schedule. Let me know what everyone thinks. Just wonder how long it will take me to get there.

For parking, you can easily fit 15/20 cars in the parking lot, parking not an issue. Getting there is not a problem. After getting on HWY 64 east, you make 1 right turn, drive 20 yards, make 1 left turn and drive 200 yards, and your there. It is a state park. I'm guessing Haw river state park. There are paths and trails everywhere. Our group could easily fit anywhere there. For directions, from Greensboro, take HWY 421 south to Siler City, Hwy 64 exit. Take a left at top of ramp. Go 15 miles(?) and you will come to Pittsboro. But stay on 64 bypass, the speed limit changes to 65 and pass through on the bypass. Pass exit 386 and the speed limit drops back down to 55. You'll be at the top of a large hill and you will see a bridge at the bottom. Just before the bridge is the turn. It's the only right turn before the bridge. The road is Fox Fire. Once on Fox Fire, go 20 yards to the only left right beside 64. that's River Access rd. Go 200 yards and your there. From Charlotte area, or farther out, just take Hwy 64 E to Siler City and follow directions from there.

And this is a public place. It's part of Haw River State park. Lots of trails, and is open year round. Regular Park rules apply. Basically, if you bring it in, take it out.

Ok, so the name of the road is Fox Fire Rd. What town was it in. Just want to know so we can mapquest it. Some of us get lost easy.No

Sounds like a nice place. And if we think it is better than Raven rock I can change the schedule. Sounds like parking is a lot closer to the rocks than Raven Rock. So is this what you guys think we should do?

Mileage wise, I'm not sure. Mapquest Pittsboro N.C. and it should give you a good guess. That is the town it borders. Coming from the Charlotte area, personally, I'd take I 85 north to Hwy 64 east at Lexington, that will take you through Asheboro, Siler City, and then Pittsboro. If anyone has been to Jordan lake, you've probably crossed the Haw river. Coming from Greensboro area, take hwy 421 south to Hwy 64 east at Siler city. Coming from the Raleigh area, take Hwy 64 west, past Jordan lake, cross the Haw river bridge, and take the first and only left just after the bridge which is Fox Fire rd. Then an immediate left which is River Access road, and follow 200 yards to the deadend in the parking lot.

Coming from any points west of Pittsboro, Hwy 64 east to Pittsboro, stay on the 4 lane, don't take the business exit, the speed limit will increase to 65. When you pass by the next 64 business exit, which is exit 386, the speed limit will decrease to 55, and you'll be at the top of a long down hill grade in the highway. You'll see the bridge at the bottom of the downhill. It is the ONLY RIGHT between the 64 business exit 386 and the bridge. Take that right, which is Fox Fire rd. then an immediate left on to River Access rd.

I feel that this is truly a great place to crawl. The sheer size of the area is way too much to describe. A mere 100 yard walk will put you in one of the most beautiful places you can think of. That's 100 yards of flatland. No hills, flat walking ground. You have to cross one ditch which is very easy. And a short walk later, rocks like you only see in mountain streams. Words will never describe this place. And I will try my best to get more pictures to post so a decision can me made if anyone wants to go. I still say, No one will feel disapointed.

Truthfully, you can run all day long and never once touch any water. The rocks are a good 6 to 8 feet out of the water, and off to the side, for the most part, of any real water. What you see in that vid is a side shoot of the river, the main channel is a good 50 yards away. And the water is no worse than Bullhole. The good vids that show the real good stuff couldn't downlod for some reason. Granted too that this is just 1 of many places to crawl here.
A loose diff cover, and weak battteries and hunger kept us from going further.

As much as we wish they where. All our spots are not real close. I want the schedule to move around. This way the same guys are not doing all the driving. It is still a little lop sided. But we need to travel around a bit in order to grow the club.

Besides that place looks worth the 2.5 hr. drive.

The event schedule has been updated. comp #4 will be at Haw river state park. Thanks to Timmy, Tony, and Nate for scouting this location. Nice job fellas.
